Nose: Wow what a nose. Banana cream pie, root beer, caramel, orange, toffee, cream, nutmeg and coconut.
Palate: Smoooooth, enters the mouth very smoothly and creamy. A soft spice builds, but never burns. The flavors mirror the nose, with a nice caramel touch. A subtle lilac and talcum powder pops up in the finish.
Comments: All Van Winkles have a very distinctive aroma that I can only describe as candlewax/bees wax. I’ve noticed slight hints of this in some other bourbons but it is always predominant in PVW. It’s a shame these whiskies are so hard to come by. At our store were lucky to get a couple of mixed cases a year, but we are always looking for alternatives. Case in point if you happen to come across a bottle of Jefferson’s Presidential Reserve 17 year old grab it, Jefferson’s bought and bottled a barrel of Pappy Van Winkle for this bottling. I was told this at a tasting and all I had to do was take a whiff and I knew it was true. As a note; I liked this bourbon better than I liked the regular bottling of Pappy 20 year old. Which I liked alot!
Alc/Vol: 45.2%
As a warning:  I’m writing this at the end of 2011 and Jefferson’s has come out with a Presidential 18 YO. I have not tried this whiskey and have no idea if it was also purchased from PVW, and in the future if Jefferson’s puts out another batch of 17 year old they may get this from another source.

Van Winkle Bourbons are made at the Buffalo Trace Distillery. You can find it here on our Distilleries of the World Map.
