BenRiach 12 year old, Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Nose: Honey and hazelnut open up first in this single malt before turning floral with lilacs. Vanilla and baking spices/allspice turn up, all the while citrus keeps this malt fresh and lively.

Palate: The baking spices greet the palate initially, followed quickly by lovely citrus. This citrus becomes more apparent with a few drops of water, bringing out the lemon/lime flavors. There is nice vanilla in this 12 year old Speyside and also flavors of oak. All these flavors linger on a nice long finish.

Comments: You can tell by its color that the 12 year old BenRiach has been aged in American oak barrels, and this is apparent with one whiff. Years ago when I started drinking scotch I loved the fruitiness of sherry aged scotches, and for years that was all I bought and consumed at home. BenRaich was the scotch that changed all that. I fell in love with the flavor of malt. The nice citrus notes that come through when they’re not covered up by aging in old wine barrels, and the subtle notes of vanilla that come from aging in used bourbon barrels.

I’ve noticed that whiskies can come off hot when first opened and BenRiach is a prime example. The first time I tasted this scotch it came off way too hot the alcohol just covered up all the subtle nuances of the whiskey. Because of this it sat on my liquor shelf untouched for a month or more, until one day I realized I was going to have to drink it sometime. It was this second glass that converted me to a BenRiach fan, and several bottles later I still am.

Alc/Vol: 46%

  1. lighter flavor than aroma suggests. dark chocolates, spicy peppery notes. vanilla, sea salt, and phenolics. Very well balanced. Slightly sweet towards the end.
